Made specifically for the Cooper Hewitt by a team of designers and fabricators,.It also interacts with the new digital touchscreen tables found throughout the museum, though a finger works just as well. A continuous stream of circular images scrolls down the screen, each image depicting a detail of a different object from the collection. It's beautiful and hypnotic and fun to guess what kind of object will be revealed as you drag a circle to the center of the screen as it expands into a full high-resolution image. Interactive galleries where visitors explore the collection digitally and engage in the design process; an Immersion Room where visitors can discover Cooper Hewitt’s wallcoverings as they were intended to be viewed. The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Makes Its Grand Re-Opening in New York City

In the cellar, enormous twin boilers were run by coal transferred from storage bin to furnace by a coal car that traveled over a miniature railroad track. The museum changed its name to Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in 2014. All this technology, supported and complemented by the Cooper Hewitt's new website and digital collections, affords a deeper understanding and appreciation of the more than 200,000 objects in the museum's collection.

Designing for Access

Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed the gift shop, admissions desk, 90th street entrance canopy, and modular exhibition casework, which was engineered and manufactured by Goppion. Landscape Architects Hood Design revitalized the museum’s massive garden. Pentagram and Village are responsible for the museum’s new graphic identity as well as the clear and colorful signage throughout the building, written in Cooper Hewitt’s custom, open-sourced typeface.

MUSEUM, SHOP, GARDEN AND CAFE

The campus also includes two historic townhouses renovated with state-of-the-art conservation technology and a unique terrace and garden. Cooper Hewitt’s collections include more than 210,000 design objects and a world-class design library. Its exhibitions, in-depth educational programmes, and on-site, degree-granting master’s programme explore the process of design, both historic and contemporary. As part of its mission, Cooper Hewitt annually sponsors the National Design Awards, a prestigious programme which honours innovation and excellence in American design. When an image is selected, the table works as a virtual gallery wall, displaying catalog information and historical data, with the added digital benefit of category and color tags. Like the wall texts, you can also touch The Pen to the table to save the vase to your collection for later reference.

This dynamic, complementary relationship between object and space and old and new is a result of the brilliant collaborative efforts of the "dream team" brought together by the Cooper Hewitt, who transformed the mansion itself into an exhibition showcase of the work of talented designers. "Rather than just having two design teams, we wanted to have a sampling of American design firms represented here," says the museum’s director Caroline Baumann. Gluckman Mayner Architects’ primary role was to design the new spaces—the modern white galleries brought alive by the exhibitions, the cafe, the classroom and lab spaces—and plan new circulation, including the naturally lit public stairwell that links the four floors of galleries.

AT THE SMITHSONIAN

On Thursday, May 2, Cooper Hewitt will be closed to the public from 10 a.m. Please visit our upcoming events page for information on programs and workshops. We encourage you to limit the number of personal belongings and bags you bring into our facilities.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS

The Immersion Room on the second floor uses digital and projection technologies to bring the museum’s collection of wallcoverings, the largest and most significant in North America to life. Browse hundreds of high-resolution digitized wallpapers and see them projected at full-scale, floor-to-ceiling on the surrounding walls. Sketch your own designs, adjust the colors and manipulate repeat patterns, and see them projected on the walls around you. Selected wallcoverings are accompanied by brief audio commentary with designers, who share design insights and inspiration. Cooper Hewitt aims to create provocative dialogues around design and amplify its historical continuum. A year-round program of lectures, conversations, and hands-on workshops provide access to the world’s leading design minds and engages design lovers of all ages in the design process.

We encourage visitors to maintain a safe social distance of six feet or more between households and groups when possible.

Enhance your visit to Cooper Hewitt with our Digital Guide on Bloomberg Connects, the free arts and culture app. Delve deeper into the museum’s history and learn more about the exhibitions currently on view. Until the death of Sarah Cooper Hewitt, the management of the museum was handled by the Hewitt sisters as directors. Following Sarah's death in 1930, the trustees of the Cooper Union appointed a board of four directors, with Constance P. Hare as chair, to administer the Museum. When Edwin S. Burdell became director of the Cooper Union in 1938, the museum was made part of his administrative responsibility, the board of directors was abolished, and an advisory council on the museum, responsible for matters relating to the museum's collections, was established.

And don’t forget everyone involved with the interactive media, website and digital collections. A 21st-century museum housed in New York City’s landmark Carnegie Mansion, Cooper Hewitt offers four floors of galleries dedicated to all disciplines of design, a permanent collection of more than 215,000 design objects fully digitized and available online, and a world-class design library. In addition to producing major special exhibitions, the museum continually refreshes the installation of objects from its collection of product design, decorative arts, works on paper, graphic design, textiles, wallcoverings, and digital materials.

You can also draw a shape that will bring up a related collection object, or try their hand at drawing simple three-dimensional forms. Cooper Hewitt is the nation’s only museum dedicated to historic and contemporary design, with a collection of over 210,000 design objects spanning thirty centuries. Located in the landmark Andrew Carnegie mansion and boasting a beautiful public garden, Cooper Hewitt makes design come alive with unique temporary exhibitions and installations of the permanent collection. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is the nation’s only museum dedicated exclusively to historic and contemporary design, with a collection of more than 215,000 design objects spanning 30 centuries. From ancient textiles and works on paper to icons of modern design and cutting-edge technologies, Cooper Hewitt’s collection serves as inspiration for creative work of all kinds and tells the story of design’s paramount importance in improving our world. But that modesty, tinged as it is with the occasional flamboyant ornamentation, works for a museum like the Cooper Hewitt.
